Raman imaging for the identification of Teflon microplastics and nanoplastics released from non-stick cookware
Luo Y, Gibson CT, Chuah C, Tang Y, Naidu R, Fang C (2022). Science of the Total Environment.
What they found
The team developed Raman imaging algorithms to pick out weak PTFE (Teflon) signals on scratched non-stick surfaces. Combined with electron microscopy, they estimate that thousands to millions of Teflon micro- and nanoplastics might be released during a simulated cooking process.
- Sample
- Several scratched non-stick (PTFE-coated) pots
- What it can't tell you
- Mainly a methods paper; the release figure is an order-of-magnitude estimate ('thousands to millions'), not a precise count. Scratching was simulated. Says nothing about whether ingested PTFE particles cause harm. Few pans.
