Lab measurement

Quantitation of gas-phase perfluoroalkyl surfactants and fluorotelomer alcohols released from nonstick cookware and microwave popcorn bags

Sinclair E, Kim SK, Akinleye HB, Kannan K (2007). Environmental Science & Technology.

What they found

Heated to normal cooking temperatures (179–233 °C surface), nonstick pans from four brands released 7–337 ng of PFOA per pan into the air. PFOA was still above 5 ng on the fourth use for both brands tested repeatedly. Microwave popcorn bags released 5–34 ng PFOA in their vapours; plain kernels in a polypropylene container released none detectable.

Sample
4 brands of nonstick frying pans; 3 brands of microwave popcorn
What it can't tell you
Small number of products, tested in the mid-2000s, before the US PFOA phase-out was completed; pans sold today are generally made without PFOA, so the figures do not describe today's cookware. Measures air release, not human intake. Does not address PTFE particles or newer PFAS.
