Human study (observational)

Detection of microplastics in human breast milk and its association with changes in human milk bacterial microbiota

Saraluck A, Techarang T, Bunyapipat P, Boonchuwong K, Pullaput Y, Mordmuang A (2024). Journal of Clinical Medicine.

What they found

Raman spectroscopy found microplastics in 23 of 59 breast milk samples (38.98%), mainly polypropylene, polyethylene, polystyrene and PVC. Milk with detectable plastic had a different bacterial makeup (more Staphylococcus and Streptococcus).

Sample
59 postpartum women in Thailand
What it can't tell you
Cross-sectional; the microbiota differences are associations and could reflect hygiene or other factors. Small single-site sample. No infant health outcomes.
