Raman microspectroscopy evidence of microplastics in human semen
Montano L, Giorgini E, Notarstefano V, Notari T, Ricciardi M, Piscopo M, Motta O (2023). Science of the Total Environment.
What they found
Raman microspectroscopy found 16 pigmented microplastic fragments (2–6 µm) in 6 of 10 semen samples. Polymers included polypropylene, polyethylene, PET, polystyrene, PVC, polycarbonate, POM and acrylic.
- Sample
- 10 semen samples from men in a polluted area of Campania, Italy
- What it can't tell you
- Ten men from a single polluted area, very few particles. No link to semen quality was tested in this abstract. The proposed route into semen is a hypothesis.
